Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are exciting steps forward in the science of healthy aging and the management of hormone imbalances. By addressing the causes of aging rather than just its symptoms, we can mitigate the effects of hormonal imbalance and help to slow the body’s natural decline, therefore retaining more of our energy and vitality.
Males or females who are experiencing the side effects of hormone imbalance could be a candidate for hormone replacement therapy. Common side effects of hormone deficiency include irritability, low energy, hot flashes, decreased toneness, headaches, weight gain, decrease in sex drive, and more.
Hormones are chemical messengers that circulate in the bloodstream and affect the function of every organ in our body. There are moment to moment fluctuations in hormones, as well as minute to minute, day to day, seasonal and then major life events such as puberty, pregnancy, adulthood and the menopause/andropause. There is a drop in hormone levels as both men and women age and, as the levels decline, we lose our energy, strength and vitality. Lifestyle and stress also boost or reduce the hormone balance.
Hormone therapies are often used to help reduce symptoms caused by the fluctuations of hormones in the body, leading up to and during the menopause (in women) and andropause (in men). They may also help with premenstrual syndrome, polycystic ovaries, endometriosis, acne and other hormone related conditions.
As each person’s biochemistry is unique, so your treatment should be. Kiss Aesthetics
offers tailor-made treatments that precisely meets an individual’s needs.
There are risks associated with using hormone therapy. These risks depend on the type of hormone therapy, the dose, how long the medication is taken and your individual health risks. For best results, hormone therapy should be tailored to each person and reevaluated every so often to be sure the benefits still outweigh the risks.
After an initial consultation which includes a comprehensive history and physical, a hormone lab panel will be ordered. Hormone therapy begins with lab work to determine your body’s unique hormone levels. Then a mixture of hormones, targeted to your body’s specific needs, is made into a compound in the form of a cream, gel, pellet, or capsule by a local compounding pharmacy.
Follow-up visits are needed, along with labs, every 1-3 months as HRT is initiated to determine your optimal dosage.
Treatment is often surprisingly immediate but generally results are seen between three and six weeks. If the hormonal imbalance is severe and the patient is still on a cycle, it can take 3-4 months to experience the desired effect.
The decision to proceed with hormone replacement therapy is based on risk versus benefit.
Some people with certain pre-existing medical conditions should not use hormone replacement therapy or they should be be used with caution.
The best way to determine if this route is right for you is to schedule a consultation with our providers.
